Mahindra & Mahindra has achieved a significant milestone in the Indian automobile market by securing the second spot in passenger vehicle sales for calendar year 2025. The performance is based on official Vahan registration data up to December 25, 2025, and represents a remarkable leap for the homegrown SUV specialist.

Historic Climb in Annual Rankings

In 2025, Mahindra registered approximately 5.81 lakh passenger vehicles, up from about 4.90 lakh units in 2024. This represents an 18% year-on-year growth, making Mahindra the second-highest selling car brand in India for the year — overtaking traditional rivals Tata Motors and Hyundai Motor India.

Maruti Suzuki retained the top position with a significantly higher sales tally, continuing its long-standing leadership in the Indian automobile market.

Key Contributors to Mahindra’s Growth

Mahindra’s rise to second place was powered largely by strong demand in the SUV segment — a market trend seen across India as buyers increasingly prefer utility and lifestyle vehicles.

Dominance of SUVs and EV Portfolio

Mahindra’s focus on SUV models continues to pay dividends. Core products such as the Scorpio, Thar, and Bolero have shown consistent demand across urban, semi-urban, and rural regions. The Thar family, especially with the introduction of the five-door Thar Roxx, recorded a 55% year-on-year increase, becoming the brand’s second best-selling model behind Scorpio.

The company’s growing electric vehicle portfolio has also contributed to overall volumes, with models like the BE 6, XEV 9e, and recently launched XEV 9s delivering incremental sales and strengthening Mahindra’s presence in the emerging EV segment.

What This Means for the Indian Auto Industry

Mahindra’s ascension reflects broader trends in the Indian passenger vehicle market — particularly the rising consumer preference for SUVs and electric vehicles. While Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate overall sales with its mass-market vehicles, Mahindra’s success shows how a focused SUV and crossover strategy can capture significant market share even against larger, diversified competitors.
